This post will talk about YouTube, one of my favourite social platforms. There are quite a few reasons to like it, and even make it your primary marketing channel. This post will cover those reasons and some ground rules of YouTube.

Why YouTube?

I love YouTube. It is probably the best creator platform out there. It has it’s problems (censorship, demonetisation, flawed copyright system) - but if you stay clear of the sussy content you’ll be fine (I have 500+ videos on my channel IRL and haven’t faced an issue yet).

Ad Revenue

YouTube has a solid in-house revenue stream for creators (you need to have 1k subs and a few other requirements - but it’s pretty achievable in less than 6 months if you play it well).

The ad revenue varies from niche to niche, but you can make some serious money (specially in niches like tech, finance, crypto). You can make anywhere from $5 to even $50 per 1000 ad views depending on the demography of your viewers.

As a rough measure, you can assume that you will make $10 per 1000 views - gross estimate though (if you’re a finance/crypto channel with viewers from US/Europe you’ll make a hell lotta money, not so much if your viewers are from third world countries in bad niches with no advertisers)

It’s usually a growing income stream if you’re consistent and this can grow pretty big with large number of subs. My current YT ad revenue is more than a fresher FAANG engineer salary. It’s THAT good. You don’t even have to do anything here (just upload videos, YT will put the ads in the video for you and ta-da!)

Influencer Marketing

YouTube is the BEST influencer marketing platform out there. Brands are willing to shell out insane amounts of money to showcase their products. You can add affiliate links, do revenue share deals, or simply promote a product for a fixed fee.

Brand deals tend to be way more sophisticated than a YouTube ad, and hence brands pay more for them than the usual Ad Revenue. You can expect 2-5x more income from here if you have a decent audience in a market with large influencer spending (tech & crypto influencers often charge tens of thousands of dollars and more for one promo)

Selling your own products

This is where most of my monies are made. You can start your own shopify store, app, crypto coin, SaaS, etc and sell your products via YouTube. Mr. Beast has done this with Beast Burgers and his chocolate brand.

This is a whole new level of money as you are essentially running a business with zero marketing spend. The profit margins are insane. There are entire companies running based on selling products via traffic generated from YouTube.

This is a big-boy play, and I don’t suggest anyone with less than 100k followers to try this. You can become a huge player if you play your cards well here.

Reusability

YouTube content can be clipped to make YouTube shorts, Tiktoks and Instagram Reels. You can cross post the most viewed/engaging parts and grow with zero efforts on other platforms.

Also, it’s super easy to redirect users from YT to your website or other social media, as it’s a video which is very human. The opposite (IG → YT) is almost impossible. Your videos are basically video sales letters for your personal brand and/or your business.

Digital Real Estate

There is a lot of digital real estate on a YouTube channel. You have posts, shorts, videos, stories, a nice description section, livestreams, trending pages, and comments section.

It’s incredibly hard to send people to your website from Instagram or Facebook or even Twitter (they reduce reach if you do so or make it hard).

On YouTube you can simply put your links in description or a pinned comments and mention it in your video - and viola! you get lots of traffic on your website. This is very important and often ignored.

Other Good Stuff

There is a lot of good stuff about YouTube - you can sell merchandise, get super chats and tips, sell memberships, etc but I personally avoid these are these are for broke-bois. I am here to teach you how to grow your brand to a company and make lots of monies not these smol cucky donations.

The Game of YouTube

You must be wondering: how can a platform be this good. There’s gotta be a catch. And there is one: it is incredibly hard to make videos.

Think about it. Growing on Twitter is all about shit posting, engaging with other accounts, making thread - you just have to write. Instagram is a bit more complex but it’s still only photos. Not much work.

YouTube? It’s a whole new ball game. You need to pick a niche where you can grow. You need to have a SOLID script. Then you have to shoot a video (*gear alert*). Now you gotta edit it and make it interesting (memes, effects, colour grading, transitions, etc).

Is that it? NO. One of the most important part of a video is the thumbnail and the title. Your reach gets nuked if you post shitty thumbnails with row click rates.

Picking a niche

I’d suggest you pick a niche where you can build a business and something that is your natural strength. Let’s say you are all about fitness. Start a fitness channel and eventually use it to get clients for your program. Same for medicine, education, tech, etc.

Pick a niche with good ad revenue and lots of sponsors for a high initial income. Pick up a growing niche where not a lot of influencers already exist

Making videos

We will discuss more about making videos, thumbnails, picking titles, gear, editing and growth tactics in the next post. For now, I will mention that make sure your watch time is high. YouTube loves videos with a high watch time. Lots of hooks & catchy topics are suggested.

Also, remember that half the game is about thumbnails & titles - high CTR and good watch time in a growing and large niche = guaranteed success.

Pitfalls

It’s very easy to anger YouTube and go to algorithm hell. You need to understand how different YouTube is from let’s say Twitter. If you shit post on twitter and you fuck up (bad take), nobody cares, they will just scroll and you’re fine.

If you post a shitty video on YouTube (bad CTR/low watchtime/controversy), you are gonna face hell my guy. The average person watches only 5-10 videos a day tops - and if one of those videos happens to be a shitty one - the user as well as YouTube gets annoyed and push you down the algo.

Remember, less watch time = less time spent on YT = less monies for YouTube = YT hates you. You cannot fuck this up.

Fix a schedule that’s good for you and stick with it. YouTube rewards consistency. Don’t post too much if you can’t come up with good ideas. One solid video a week is better than a daily shitty video roundup.

Last but not the least, don’t offend the YouTube guidelines. Don’t post anything YouTube won’t like you to post (get the point?). No controversies please. YouTube will likely ban you for it, and definitely reduce your reach if you do so beyond limits. You might get mass reported anyway!
