I have struggled with this question a lot, and seem to have come with a conclusion.

A "Real" Business

On first instincts, SaaS seems to be the "better" business model to be in. After all, that's the buzz word these days (let alone if you build one of those AI SaaS!)

You can also get a multiple, you are doing a "real" business, unlike those twitter "grifters" who sell "measly" infoproducts.

I had this thinking for way too long, and it took me a lot of time to realise the following:

Money comes when you focus on the right problem, not on the solution

Problem v/s Solution

Don't get me wrong - the solution is important too. But what really matters the most is getting to the root of the problem, picking new problems of your customer and solving them FAST.

The problem with a SaaS is that many a times (inevitably) a lot of your time will go into the solution part of the problem ("we should add another feature") instead of focusing on the problem ("how can we help the customer and make money").

Infoproducts take way less time to produce. You can get to market in literally a day (if you pre sell, you can do it instantly!) This gives you time to focus on marketing, understanding your customers, coming up with new products, etc.

"Think Long Term!"

I know you will hit me with a "SaaS is better long term!". Except that isn't necessarily true. You can realistically launch 2 infoproducts a year. Sure, 90% of the revenue comes in the first week - but so what?

You can have 10 infoproducts at a point in your social media career, and you'll sell something almost everyday. Money made one time isn't bad. Also, you can always have a membership based infoproduct (like newsletter, groups, databases, etc).

Coming to saleability, there are blogs that have sold for $100M or more. There are media empires worth multiple billions. Even twitter accounts that are monetised well can be sold. People are just not creative about this.

Let's Talk Numbers

When I launched Wifi Money Bible, I made $15k in first week. But now it sells a few copies a month, not 15k/month like launch.

Compare this with my paid mentorship group. It didn't sell $15k on day 1, as its at a lower cost. But it has an MRR that started at $200/month 3 months back that keeps on rising (currently at $700 MRR). This will keep rising and form a 15k/month income in perhaps a year or so.

I see my group as a SaaS, there's a monthly subscription. And you can see how my pure infoproduct made WAY more money overall. The guide doesn't have a reliable MRR like the group, but it does give a HUGE payoff right away - which is preferable for people who don't have a lot of income.

Combining the two - a one-time infoproduct and a MRR infoproduct - gives a nice combo of income + stability. It's hard to get the instant revenue in a SaaS (yearly subscriptions exist but people rarely buy them right away).

What's for me?

There's just one problem - you need credibility and expertise for infoproducts. If you are even somewhat accomplished at something, it's better to just focus on infoproducts. You can start making money right away and make it big (even blogs like TechCrunch are "infoproducts", the scale can be immense!)

If you're somewhat technical (or have a technical founder) with no expertise (or you have the whole "course" business) - you can go for SaaS. But let me warn you, it's not a game where you make money fast. Except a year before you get meaningful revenue.
